How To Make New Year’s Resolutions

This time of year, everyone is trying to make New Year’s Resolutions, something they want to improve in the coming year. The new year is sort of like a fresh start, a way to improve your life by starting over well. Many people make these resolutions, but not nearly as many actually keep them. This is partially because of lack of willpower, but I like to blame it on poorly made resolutions. Here are some tips I came up with to make good ones:

  1. Makes them realistic: a good resolution would be “Read a book every month”. A worse resolution would be  “Study the Encyclopedia Britannica”.
  2. Make them specific: don’t make your resolutions too broad, otherwise you’ll have trouble sticking to them. If your resolution is  “Lose weight”, make it more specific by changing it to “Lose 20 pounds”, that way you can see when you’re reached your goal, and you won’t slack off by saying “Well, I lost a little weight by peeing, right?”
  3. Make them useful: don’t make a resolution like “Learn to hail a cab”, this isn’t even a real resolution, instead make it something like “Learn to make bitchin’ Excel tables”. Now that’s useful!
  4. Write them down!
  5. Tell others about them! That way, it’s not only going to be your conscience nagging you, but your mom too.

It’s a brand new year people, let’s not screw this up.
